We all cognise the first-class gap statementof the Westminster Shorter Catechism
: the chief terminal of man is to exalt God and relish him everlastingly. Course this is allly scriptural ( 1 Cor 10, Gap 3, 1 Pet 4,etc. ), but sometimes it gets fuzzed in pattern. In other words, what exactly have it away intend to exalt God? How make we hump?
Thomas Watson
, in his typically clear mode, resumes the scriptural instruction onglorifying Godinaconcise, memorable, and practical mode. Here are a couple of inputs of his.
We take atGod 's glorification:
1 ) When we prefer God 's glorification above all other things; above recognition, estate, dealings; when the glorification of God coming in competition with them, we prefer his glorification before them. If dealings lie in our style to heaven, we must either jump over them, or step upon them.
2 ) When we are contented that God 's volition should pass off, though it may traverse ours. Divine, I am contented to be a loser if thou be a gainer; to hold less wellness, if I hold more grace, and thou more glorification.
3 ) When we are contented to be outshined by others in gifts and regard, so that his glorification may be increased. A man that holds God in his bosom, and God 's glorification in his optic, wants that God should be proclaimed; and if this be effectuated, permit who will be the instrument, he joy. ... Allow my taper locomote out, if the Sun of Righteousness may reflect.
He names quite an few more, exhibiting the Scripture that manoeuver us in extolling God. I especially cared the three cited above: we exalt God by dying to self, dying to the cosmos, and being low ( respecting others better than ourselves ). We laud God when we verily but stop conceiving of ourselves and revolve around himthen our neighbour, as the sum-up of the jurisprudence Thatch in Levi 22. But for your information, here are a couple of more Watson lists. We exalt God when we 1 ) walking cheerfully, 2 ) stand upwardly for his truths, 3 ) praise him, 4 ) draw others to him, and 5 ) dwell holy inhabits. Again, Watson applies Word and exemplify these in a clear manner.
